It does not set out to prove a hypothesis but instead provides a better understanding of what students are taught and how they learn in studio art classes. The goal of the present article is to provide the groundwork for better transfer studies by identifying particular kinds of thinking skills actually learned in the arts that might be useful in other disciplines. These dispositions developed into eight categories of “studio habits of mind” from which the data sources were coded by independent raters. Each unit was coded for the kinds of thinking dispositions being taught. Class observations and interviews were transcribed and analyzed for interaction units between a teacher and a student. The five participating teachers were interviewed. The researchers conducted field observations during the 2001-2002 school year and videotaped 38 visual arts classes (two to three hours in length). Both schools admit students through audition in an art form (visual arts, dance, drama, or music). Two Boston arts high schools served as the site for this study: The Walnut Hill School for the Arts, an independent, residential, suburban school whose student body includes many students who are foreign nationals and non-native speakers of English (particularly from Korea) and The Boston Arts Academy, a public, urban school whose students’ ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds represent the demographics of the city of Boston. Most of all, this study sets the stage for future research to test out hypotheses on arts and transfer. This research should help advocates explain arts education to policymakers, help art teachers develop and refine their teaching practices, and help educators in other disciplines learn from the existing practices in art teaching. The findings of this present study – the habits of mind cultivated from serious art study – will be instrumental in achieving several goals. Understand Art World: Students in visual arts classes learn about art history and the practicing art world today and their own relationship to today’s art world.Stretch and Explore: Students are expected to try new things, to explore, take risks, and capitalize on their mistakes. ![]() They are also asked to judge their own work and that of others. Reflect: Students are asked to think about and explain their process, intentions, and decisions.Observe: Students are taught to look closely at their own works (the color, line, texture, forms, structure, expression, and style), at others works (whether by their peers or by professional artist), and the world (when they are working from observation) and to notice things they might have otherwise missed. ![]() This habit of mind includes making works exemplify a property that is not visible such as mood or atmosphere. ![]() Express: Students are meant to learn to go beyond craft to convey a personal vision and meaning in their work.Envision: Students are taught to generate mental images that will help guide their work and use their imagination to think of new ideas and forms.Engage and Persist: Students are taught to engage in a project, focus on a task for a sustained period of time and persist with their work. ![]()

You can usually find classic models well below their original retail prices, so don't expect a high resale value. If you're a collector looking to sell your finds for a profit, the Samba may be a difficult shoe for the job. ![]() In fact, they often come heavily worn–and collectors are drawn more to these scuffed-up versions than those in excellent shape. The Samba doesn't play by the same rules. When buying a collectable shoe, running shoe enthusiasts typically look for those that are in pristine condition. Since the Samba has been so defined by the classic black, white and gum, many of the most popular Samba releases stay faithful to this tried-and-true model. Unlike many classic running shoes of old that have seen dozens of retro releases in bold colours and revolutionary designs, the Samba, which represents the everyman, has stayed close to its roots over time. ![]() It's clear that with its ever-growing popularity and strong roots, the adidas Samba is here to stay. Ashton Kutcher wore them in That '70s Show, and music superstars like Justin Timberlake and Rihanna have been spotted around town rocking their Sambas. Eddie Murphy wore them in Beverly Hills Cop, Shia LaBeouf battled the bots in Sambas in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Denzel Washington donned them during training scenes in Remember the Titans. The Samba has made cameo appearances in a number of hit movies. It even made its way to the silver screen. Though athletes initially wore it for its performance and comfort, the Samba became a fashion staple as celebrities began incorporating the shoe into their casual outfits. The Samba knew no economic boundaries and was universally loved–from small rural shops to high-end retailers. The simple, classic retro aesthetic of the shoe is simple and unassuming. Samba is synonymous with soccer culture, particularly in Europe. The adidas Samba's Classic Features and Evolving Design By the 1980s and 1990s, the adidas Samba had taken over European streetwear culture, from Germany to England and anywhere else soccer was the king of sport. It was a perfect companion to the streetwear tracksuits of the 1960s. As adidas grew its product catalogue, the Samba remained a constant. ![]() The all-leather shoe originally came in black with the now-iconic three stripes–still one of its most popular colourways. The Samba was built for performance, but its classic styling allowed it to be easily paired with any colour sports uniform. The Samba was the first soccer shoe that allowed players to train on the slickest of surfaces–even frozen fields. Adi Dassler launched adidas in 1949, and one year later, the Samba was released. The Samba has been there for nearly all of adidas's 70-plus years in the sportswear industry, and its popularity has never wavered. Not only is the adidas Samba one of the first shoe launches in the company's history, but it's also their second-highest selling design, ever. Long before Nike, Puma and Umbro entered the soccer arena, there was the Samba. NOTE : If the Sign-in Error, try opening the file Sign In Workaround. It is also perhaps impossible to experience Gourdet’s assured debut and not consider Haiti’s troubled history and the way the country has been portrayed in news reports over the decades. It is perhaps unfair to ask a restaurant such as Kann, Gregory Gourdet’s revelatory Haitian eatery, which opened in August, to carry a country on its shoulders. Griyo, a twice-cooked pork, is Haiti’s national dish and served at Kann with bannann peze (fried plantains) and avocado pikliz. But it might include more than just yours. “Are we celebrating anything this evening?” The answer will always be life. Arjav Ezekiel, co-owner of Birdie’s in Austin with chef Tracy Malechek- Ezekiel, was never formally taught as a sommelier, but he’s managed to create one of the best wine lists in the country. Sitting at the chef’s counter at Comedor Lilia in Portland, chef Juan Gomez will tell you how freeing it is to cook the food of the Pacific Northwest through a Mexican lens as an expression of himself-hence his signature dish of a pork-collar confit served with pan arabe. She expressed her enjoyment in photography, but also said, “It can be a lot to see so many images of people doing so many fun and different things, all with different styles and it can be easy to have yours lost and spiral down a hole of comparison.” Even my friend, who’s the cutest person alive, struggles with comparison. And I was surprised to hear that it’s a love/hate relationship for her. If I were her, I would feel stressed to post a new picture-perfect photo every day. She loves to pose, edit, and inspire! Since she’s taken on the title of a “cute famous Instagrammer,” I had to ask, how she does it. She’s gone from 500 followers to 18k in months. I have a near and dear friend who has embraced Instagram this last year. “Wow, she’s so pretty, why can’t I look like that?” or “I wish I had that outfit” or “My photos aren’t as cool as hers.” I have spent mindless hours on this page, telling myself nothing but negative things. On Instagram, there is a “discover” page that highlights posts you may like. Limiting screen time will help kids combat depressive feelings. Rather than having your kids spend their free time on their screen, encourage them to indulge in a meaningful activity such as art, music, dance, sports, or a hobby! This will significantly increase their self-worth far more than any time spent on social media. Every kid should feel like they have a valuable life. ![]() From personal experience, the more time I spend on social media, the worse I feel about myself. “Several findings indicate that greater time spent on is associated with more social comparison, which, in turn, is associated with more depressive symptoms” (Hanna, 2017). How can we teach our kids not to get caught up in comparison? ![]() I just want our kids to stop comparing their life through the flawed lens of social media. It’s almost impossible to remember that everyone is struggling when all I see is “happiness.” Now, I’m not saying we should to post every bad moment in our life or that we even need to. If I’m having a bad day and I scroll through social media, I often feel worse about my day because I see everyone enjoying their life with no stress or struggles. Everyone is smiling, showcasing a great moment in their life or looking confident as ever. I’m scrolling through Instagram right now, and out of the first 20 posts I see, not one is being vulnerable. Since the majority of posts are highlights though, it’s hard not to compare our worst to others’ best. They are wonderfully relatable rather than comparable. Posts like these exemplify reality! They showcase a non-picture-perfect life. Occasionally you may come across a post of a mom with her child’s spit-up all over her or a so-called “Pinterest fail,” but how common is it to see things like this? And it isn’t capable of showing us the loneliness and isolation that many people are feeling. It doesn’t show our arguments with family members, your neighbor losing her job, or the moment your teenager gives you the “I hate you” look. What social media doesn’t show is how everyone’s life is just as imperfect as our own. According to a study done on about 1,500 teens and adults, Instagram was rated the “worst social media network for mental health and well being” (Macmillan, 2017). “Such comparisons may occur frequently with use because users tend to disproportionately represent positive life developments, portray themselves to be happier than they actually are” (Hanna, 2017). Because of this, comparison is becoming a common negative feeling, especially in kids. Social media is often referred to as a “highlight reel,” meaning everyone shares their best moments in life. ![]() Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, Orlando.
